A domain name extension, for example the .com (or .COM; domain extensions are not case-sensitive) in “www.example.com”, is also known as Top Level Domain (TLD). TLDs are categorized by ICANN, the organization responsible for overseeing of the domain name system, into several main categories. The categories as they currently stand are:
Generic (.com, .net, .biz, .info etc.) also known as gTLD
Country Code (.uk, .cn, .it etc.) also known as ccTLD
Multiorganizations (.gov, .mil, .edu etc.)
